StarCraft |
Recently, an in-game Starcraft 2 mod called ‘World of Starcraft’ launched its official Youtube trailer. The main issue between the mod creator and Blizzard was the choice of name, as ‘World of Starcraft’ is owned by Blizzard. In a forum for the official project, World of Starcraft’s creator posted the following.
The Deputy General Council from Blizzard contacted me last night to discuss the details of the World of Starcraft project. This states that Blizzards main concern was that World of Starcraft would be an independent game.
A talented gamer named Ryan Winzen created a new MMO for the PC. Utilizing Blizzard’s Starcraft 2 map editor, Ryan envisioned a very plausible World of Starcraft. Ryan is not an employee at Blizzard/Activision, he’s simply a dedicated fan with a handful of ideas. Blizzard contacted Ryan the same night as his video was removed. Some Blizzard employees also worried Ryan was developing parts of his game outside of their software as a full blown MMORPG.
Ryan has teamed up with the owner and creator of a separate mod called Starcraft Universe. Let me clarify a few things: - World of Starcraft name is changed to Starcraft Universe. Ryan hopes to continue making his SC2 custom map mod now that he has a new name, Blizzard’s blessing and a little help from the community. Riot Games (makers of League of Legends) sent a message to Ryan after being impressed by his video.
Unless you’re Valve, the top attraction for a gaming company is money, not the admiration of the game’s community. However, when Starcraft fan ‘Ryan’ posted a trailer for his ‘World of Starcraft’ mod, which blends the setting and look of Starcraft with World of Warcraft MMO style, he was in for a surprise.
It was never our intention to stop development on the mod or discourage the community from expressing their creativity through the StarCraft II editor. As always, we actively encourage development of custom maps and mods for StarCraft II, as we’ve done with our strategy games in the past. That’s why we release an editor with our RTS games, and why we feature top player-created content in the custom game search. To some, this is truth to rabid rumours of an upcoming Starcraft MMO title.
