This week Sony finally announced the launch of their "Next Generation Portable" game/phone machine. While there is little doubt that the games available will feature lots of downloadable files, there will also be a flash memory card device that will house game cards. The device will play digital versions of current PSP games, but will not have a UMD drive.

After months of rumors the PSP2 is officially revealed. It is a very powerful device who according to Sony compares in terms of capabilities to the PS3. It will include touch screens, cellular connectivity, GPS, Bluethooth, multiple cameras, motion detection and more. According to Sony the device will include new games of the PlayStation main series.

The console will include an OLED touch screen with four times better resolution that the current PSP. Sony hasn’t revealed an estimated price for the console or any launch games that will be released in proximity to the launch date of the device.

In addition, Sony has revealed the PlayStation Suite – a simple developing kit that will enable developing games for the PlayStation brand as well as other devices. Sony’s bet. Sony will introduce the PSP2 into a very busy market with devices that can run portable games.

While we don’t expect the same price point as the 3DS, what with Sony’s 5-inch touchscreen OLED, 3G, Wi-Fi, touchpad, and electronic compass – it’d be awesome to have the NGP priced in the $300 range.
