League of Legends is an online multiplayer session-based game that combines elements of role-playing and strategy genres with addictive battle action. Players also advance their Summoner’s rank and power to gain new abilities and items, assisting their Champions in battle.

League of Legends emphasizes team-oriented gameplay and players must work together in order to defeat the opposing team. League of Legends will feature custom-built multiplayer support including matchmaking, stat tracking, clan support, anti-cheat systems, dedicated in-game ladders and Leaverbuster technology. With the financial backing of Tencent, the company plans to enhance its flagship title “League of Legends," expand into new markets and develop new games.

Tencent was an investor in Riot Games during its previous rounds of financing. “The team at Riot has built an incredible company in just a few years,” stated Mitch Lasky, partner at Benchmark Capital, and Riot Games board member. The title, League of Legends, is an isometric strategy game where teams of players compete against each other in a one-on-one format. As mentioned, the game costs users absolutely nothing to play. "It is an interesting time for games. Social and mobile games are very interesting, but it's not our focus.

Details on Tencent's purchase are light—neither company is officially confirming the purchase price—but Tencent did end up buying out Riot Games' additional investors in the process. According to Takahashi, Tencent's purchase represents the largest cross-border acquisition in the gaming sector. Though it's not the largest social gaming acquisition overall, it does follow a series of big-number deals in the social gaming space over the previous year.
