Microsoft has officially stated that the “phantom data” issue on Windows Phone 7 handsets is down to Yahoo Mail. If you missed the whole phantom data problem, it involved Windows Phone 7 sending mysterious chunks of data without the mobile owner’s knowledge, running up their data allowance.

Microsoft stated: “We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronization of email between the Windows Phone Mail client and Yahoo Mail.  A survey by market research firm NPD found that handsets running Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 (WP7) OS only accounted for 2 percent of US smartphone sales in Q4 2010.

In comparison, handsets based on the rival Android OS were responsible for 53 percent of smartphone sales followed by Apple’s iOS and RIM’s BlackBerry OS, both on 19 percent. Even Microsoft’s old Windows Mobile OS (on 4 percent) scored better than WP7, which tied with Palm’s webOS, also with 2 percent. NPD offers a number of suggestions for how Microsoft could strengthen WP7.

After its first few months in the market, Microsoft's revamped Windows Phone 7 OS held on to 2 percent of the U.S. smartphone OS market, according to data from NPD Group. Android, meanwhile, continued its dominance with 53 percent.

Android was up 9 percentage points to 53 percent, according to NPD. Rounding out the top five were Microsoft's legacy Windows Mobile platform at 4 percent, which dipped 3 percentage points. Windows Phone 7, which hit stores in November, grabbed 2 percent of the market by year's end. NPD said the Windows Phone 7 data shows that Microsoft is "off to a slow start."

"Microsoft has made the case for Windows Phone 7's differentiation and improved integration. A month earlier, Microsoft said it sold more than 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices in the first six weeks.
